President Trump Systematically Dismantles Iran’s Terror Regime
The Trump administration’s synchronized deployment of devastating military strikes and a crushing financial blockade has systematically targeted the operational foundation of the Iranian terror regime. By targeting the regime’s core military leadership and choking its economic lines of survival, this dual strategy has severely degraded Tehran’s ability to project power and sustain its military and regional terror networks.
Military Strikes Shatter Iran’s Command Structure
A series of highly coordinated U.S.-Israeli airstrikes has severely degraded Iran’s elite military command structure, killing senior leaders and destroying critical military infrastructure across the country. The February 28 opening strikes killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with numerous senior military commanders, including IRGC Commander Mohammad Pakpour, Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh, senior security adviser Ali Shamkhani, and Armed Forces Chief of Staff Abdolrahim Mousavi, who was killed during a meeting of senior Iranian leadership in Tehran. Subsequent strikes continued targeting Iran’s military and intelligence leadership.
The strikes have eliminated a large number of senior Iranian commanders, including top figures in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iran’s military command. The campaign has also targeted missile sites, air-defense systems, command centers, nuclear facilities, military bases and other strategic infrastructure, significantly degrading the regime’s ability to coordinate and conduct military operations.
Khamenei’s Death Marks a Historic Leadership Blow
The deadliest single wave of targeted strikes on February 28 successfully eliminated Iran’s long-standing Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. His son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, was subsequently hit in a follow-up attack and wounded. Mojtaba Khamenei later assumed the position of Supreme Leader.
The elimination of Khamenei represented a major blow to the regime’s political and military leadership. As Supreme Leader, he exercised ultimate authority over Iran’s armed forces, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and the country’s broader security apparatus. Under Khamenei, Iran expanded its campaign of exporting terrorism across the region, providing funding, weapons, and support to terrorist organizations and armed groups.
Khamenei’s leadership therefore represented not only the political authority of the Iranian regime, but also the continuation of a decades-long strategy of regional expansion, terrorism, and support for armed groups.
Trump’s Economic Campaign Targets Tehran’s Financial Lifelines
Following the military degradation of the regime, President Trump’s administration deployed a crushing secondary-sanctions campaign designed to increase Iran’s financial isolation and cut off the economic networks that sustain the regime.
The campaign has been described by the administration as an “economic D-Day,” with sweeping new sanctions intended to pressure Iran and countries and companies that continue doing business with Tehran.
Washington Expands the Global Financial Blacklist
The United States has expanded sanctions against individuals, entities, vessels, and financial networks connected to Iran. The campaign is designed to make it increasingly difficult for Tehran to access the international financial system and for foreign companies to continue facilitating Iranian trade.
Front companies and commercial networks connected to Iran’s military infrastructure have also faced U.S. sanctions. Mahan Air, for example, has long been sanctioned by Washington over its alleged support for the IRGC and its role in transporting personnel and materiel.
Iran’s Oil Trade and Shadow Fleet Face Growing Pressure
The administration has also targeted Iran’s oil revenue, one of the regime’s most important sources of foreign currency.
Iran has historically relied heavily on its shadow fleet and other sanctions-evasion networks to transport oil despite U.S. restrictions. China remains Iran’s principal oil customer, making the ability to disrupt or restrict those transactions a central component of Washington’s economic pressure campaign.
The latest sanctions are intended to make those transactions increasingly costly for companies and countries that continue facilitating Iranian oil exports.
The Rial and Iran’s Economy Under Severe Pressure
The financial onslaught has contributed to a historic deterioration in Iran’s currency and economy. The rial has fallen to record lows, while inflation, unemployment, and economic instability continue to place enormous pressure on the Iranian population.
The rial has suffered a historic collapse amid sanctions, war, and economic disruption, falling below 2 million rials per U.S. dollar on the open market in late August.
By choking off vital asset pipelines and foreign-currency revenues, the Trump administration is seeking to deprive the regime of the resources it uses to maintain its military and security apparatus and support its regional allies and terror proxies.
Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the regime has also pursued Khomeini’s policy of exporting the Islamic Revolution abroad, using the IRGC and its Quds Force to support and arm terrorist organizations and militant groups across the region.
Iran’s Record of Domestic Repression
The destruction and isolation of Iran’s economic and military infrastructure is occurring against the backdrop of a long record of domestic repression by the Iranian government. International human-rights organizations have documented large-scale killings, arrests, executions, and other abuses during crackdowns on political dissent and protests.
Protest Crackdowns Leave Thousands Dead
During the nationwide protests that began in late December 2025, Iranian security forces carried out a brutal crackdown that killed thousands of protesters. Reports have put the death toll at approximately 35,000, a figure cited by the European Parliament, while the UN Special Rapporteur on Iran, Mai Sato, reported that at least 5,000 people had been killed, citing information from medical sources, with some medical-source estimates suggesting the number could be as high as 20,000 or more.
